SED 521: Models of Teaching
Fall 2011
This semester explored different models of teaching. The main thing I took away from it is that I need to expand what models I use. I am guilty of using the non-directive teaching model most of the time because it fits my personality and curiosity. It is hard to remember that not everyone searches for the answer or anticipates the teacher's questions. My students need me to implement other models so they can be successful in their learning and meet their different learning styles. Direct instruction, simulation, and independent study are all useful models that can work in my classroom. To that end, I have added an independent study project for my Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras each grading period that allows them to choose something of interest such as composing a short piece of music or researching a career related to music. I also intend to use more simulations as concert and contests approach to broker more confidence in my students.
