Reflection on School Violence

This article talks about the Harrold school district that allows teachers to carry guns on school grounds. Teachers must have a concealed handgun license and be approved by the school board to carry their weapon on campus. The policy was put in place in 2008, just one year after the Virginia Tech shootings.
I believe that schools should be a safe place for students and teachers. Adding more guns to the mix is not the way to make schools safer. In the case of Harrold ISD, I understand why they have implemented this policy. The school district is small and the nearest law enforcement center that could come to the school’s aid is far away. For Mesquite ISD, we have SROs on the middle and high school campuses. The Mesquite police department is within 10 minutes of any Mesquite school. Response by the police to situations in the past has been swift. The best remedy is for teachers and students to be proactive and aware of what is happening around them.
